This was a fun and quick book to read. The historic fiction aspect, along with the well-told mystery, was very compelling. I couldn't put it down and read the whole book in one sitting. I only wish this book had been available before I spent time in Rome 14 years ago - I would have enjoyed the interactive mystery at the end of the story.Product details

How To Disappear in Rome A Mystery Scavenger Hunt Pablo Proenza 9781544037455 Books Reviews
This is the book I wished I had last time we traveled to Rome. Proenza has the eye of a local and weaves his insights into a fantastic and fun experience. More please.
An amazingly creative and interactive way to explore one of the most beautiful cities in the world. A wonderful blend of mystery, romance and adventure that you literally get to be a part of!
This is a must have for anyone traveling to Rome, whether it is your first time or not! You get to wander around getting lost in the city while experiencing a wonderful surprise around every corner. This book and the day we did the scavenger hunt through Rome was a day I will never forget!!
We often think of stories making the journey from book to the big screen. We think that first there are authors of books, and then later directors and screenwriters get hold of the story. But what happens when a film director, editor and screenwriter – someone from the world of cinema – writes a book? When that person is Pablo Proenza, the answer is magic. How to Disappear in Rome is alive and captivating, and full of mystery and intrigue. It weaves together events of 1986-87, with those in 1939 and with all of Roman history as seen and experienced through its monuments, piazzas, buildings and sculptures. It calls forth Churchill’s famous 1939 statement "I cannot forecast to you the actions of Russia. It is a riddle, wrapped in a mystery, inside an enigma, but perhaps there is a key." The same can be said of this slim volume, and Proenza does provide a key. The clues he gives are best followed on foot in Rome. If you are reading this book sitting at home, you probably cannot solve the mystery, but it’s still a fun and engaging read. This book is a puzzle and a mystery as well as a tour guide to Rome. There’s a refreshing playfulness to Proenza’s whole approach to delivering his first book to readers he invites you to give it away to a stranger when you are done reading it. How to Disappear in Rome abounds with a keen sense of history and place, and a love of Rome. It is a testament to the lasting impression that city made on the author, who lived there in his youth at the end of the twentieth century.
Proenza's clever book is a great way to have a wonderful, educational day in Rome, and, at a slim 75 pages, is easy to pack.
As Proenza suggests at the end, I left it on a bus for another traveler to enjoy and trust it made their day. )
This book was incredible! The story itself is as mysterious as it is romantic. Far beyond that though, the book is a perfect tour guide. It starts you off at the Monumento Nazionale and takes you all over the city, seeing nearly all of its beautiful historic sights on a walking tour you tackle at your own pace. As you unlock each clue, you're given the directions to the next stop!
It's a totally unique and fresh way to experience a city. Instead of following a guidebook and getting lost and frustrated, you take a guided tour of sorts, never knowing what incredible, famous monument is just around the corner. The book encourages you to fall into the city in a way a guidebook never would. Ditch the typical tourist stuff and see Rome in a brand new way.
I took a copy with me on a recent trip. My group and I had an unforgettable day. I'd been to Rome once before and loved learning more about the city while we solved puzzle after puzzle at each stop. They loved rounding corners to find unexpected sights like the Trevi Fountain, the Spanish Steps, and the Pantheon. It was so much more exciting for them than seeking out sights on our own. It made getting lost fun and gave us a tour unique to our group with time for pasta and cocktails along the way.
I highly recommend this book to anyone living in or visiting the Eternal City!
On our trip we did Florence, Rome, and the Amalfi coast... and of all the sights and places we saw this was the BEST day we spent of the entire 10 day trip. I still think about how much fun it was. We decided to take our time with it. So we'd make it to one place and then stop for a snack and a drink then moved on to the next clue. It took us a full day but we saw parts of Rome that we would've walked right past and never experienced, and the story is captivating. You don't feel like a tourist at all since you're following a story and not just doing a "walking tour". And you really have no idea what you're about to encounter until you turn a corner and happen upon the sights. It really is an incredible way to experience the city. Do yourself a favor and invest in this scavenger hunt. I've recommended it to all of my friends traveling to Rome. I really can't recommend this enough!!! 100% worth it. I want to go back and do it again!! )
