He was a beloved family physician and a ruthless doctor of death who almost got away with murder.

It was a friendly hunting trip--two men kicking back, shooting at clay pigeons on campgrounds near rural Montrose, Pa. Then, a single shot rang out. Moments later, Marty Dillon, a promising young lawyer, was dead of a gunshot wound to the chest. His friend, Dr. Stephen Scher, later tearfully explained that Dillon had been running with a shotgun after a porcupine, and tripped and fell, accidentally killing himself. But what really happened?

Marty Dillon's violent death was immediately declared an accident by the local coroner in 1976. But as Dillon's body was lowered into the cold ground, did a damning secret, one that would haunt his friends and family for decades, go with him?

* Were rumors of an affair between Dr. Scher and Marty's wife, Pat, true?
* Why did the couple marry so soon after Dillon's death?
* If the shot was self-inflicted, why did the bullet come from Dr. Scher's gun?
* What was it about Dillon's bloody wound that cast suspicion on Scher?

After 20 years of pleading with authorities and finally hiring their own investigators, Dillon's parents persuaded the Pennsylvania State Police to reopen the case. They exhumed Dillon's body--and his decayed remains told the real story of that tragic day two decades earlier. On October 22, 1997, Dr. Stephen Scher was convicted of the murder of Marty Dillon--final justice for a cold-blooded killer who for 20 years thought he had gotten away with murder. Maria Eftimiades recounts the shocking true story in Secrets from the Grave.

Secrets from the Grave eBook Maria Eftimiades

Because of lying, cheating law enforcement personnel, and not one single one of these characters in Montrose was fired, demoted, or shot.

It is always with a conflicted attitude that I read true crime. In every case I wish to heaven that I am reading a good author's fiction novel instead. No author though could ever have concocted the three different law enforcement entities that lied, stonewalled, dismissed Martin's parents (these two ought to at least get a medal from the President for their dogged pursuit of killer) and otherwise acted like their real job was to just sit around and eat donuts instead of pursuing the killer.

Maria is a first rate story teller. I will shortly be looking at her other books with relish, but again wish the crimes were fiction. "Suspending disbelief" is the only way I can get thru the persistent frustration at the cops, the horrendously incompetent humans who inhabit Pennsylvania's State Police, the AG, and his/her deputies to say nothing of the dismal performance of local law enforcement. If you have ever decided to not buy a gun because it's
the cops' job, you need to read this book.

No question that Martin has to be a stoned idiot to ignore the shenanigans of Patty. And his 'friend'. He bears some responsibility for his fate, just as a bungee jumper does for his.

But that is like breaking your arm, and having surgeons screw up your surgeries three times to 'fix it' , ending in a full arm replacement. Yes, you are at fault for breaking your arm, but it is the incompetence of the 'healer' that ruined your life.

Secrets from the Grave eBook Maria Eftimiades Reviews

This was exactly as described and arrived in good time. The book itself was well written and filled with facts.
Two blossoming careers, one very foolish woman, social blindness and enough lies to give the word new meaning. A very good read that, even though the outcome is known, keeps you rushing to the final word.
I loved this book and couldn't wait for the whole story to be known. So sad that it took so long. His poor parents suffered so much just because of one man's ego and selfishness.
Very good read...fast-moving. I knew the story from a TV documentary and the book, of course, gave many more details...couldn't wait until the end to until see the "just desserts." Well-written,nothing left out...the writing was very understandable and so interesting...
Is justice denied, this story caused me to think of that legal maxim. For this family justice finally was served. Very good account, what a tragedy for the Dillon grandparents, wonder if the grandchildren ever understood or admitted their error in judgment. What a horrible, manipulative man Scher was and is....a cautionary tale for small town law enforcement as well, not to make assumptions, etc.
Secrets from the Grave was an interesting and well written book. It was suspenseful in that the reader does not know the outcome until the very end. It's incredible that it took the state so many years to bring this case before a jury. That, I don't understand!
The only thing I didn't like about the book, which is nobody's fault, is that there were SO MANY people in the book! There were so many names to remember, especially when it took twenty years to be tried.
However, I really did enjoy the book and definitely recommend it to true crime buffs. Well done!
A great book that is easy to read without losing interest in the story. If you were an adult during the 1970s, it is easy to understand how .Dr. Scher got a pass on his story for so many years. Scher was also helped by the nurses who knew of the affair between Pat Dillon (Martin's wife and Scher were afraid for their jobs and chose not to come forward with a true motive for the murder.

The motion by Scher's attorney about the district attorney's office taking too long to charge Scher won the day in appeals court, in 2004. Scher was tried again, in 2008, and another jury quickly convicted him. Scher died in prison, in 2010.

Martin Dillon still suffers the indignity his widow inflicted on him by burying him in an unmarked grave. Sometime between 1999 and 2009 Pat Dillon divorced Scher and has married for the third time. Dillon's children would be in their forties now and one is left to wonder if time and two juries has weakened their strong support of Scher.

Forensic Files aired an episode on Dillon's murder, in 1998. It is titled "Grave Evidence" and includes TV news video from 1996-97 that shows Scher, Pat Dillon Scher, Dillon's children and parents, and major characters from the book including the author.
It might be time for Maria Eftimiades to provide an update of the major players in this sad story.
